You are correct- but you are UNDERSTATING your case, my friend! If the war had continued even a few more months MILLIONS of Japanese- mostly CHILDREN- would have starved to death. When MacArthur got to Japan, he cabled DC "Send me food or send me bullets"

Look up the Potsdam Declaration from late July 1945. Truman repeated the assurance he'd made the day he took the oath of office- that he did not intend that the Japanese were to be exterminated or enslaved. However, it called for the complete disarmament of Japan, an occupation and stern justice for Japanese war criminals. Prime Minister Suzuki responded with a statement that can mean either "no comment" or "we kill it with silence"

"Japanese are incredibly honorable. Willing to fight to the death of every last man/woman/child."That's from the Japanese point of view. From the point of view of those the Japanese were killing, it meant that conquering Japan was going to cost 1 million or more lives.

"so it's their fault"Yes, precisely. The Japanese militarists could have surrendered. Truman was super clear about what was going to happen. Even after 2 bombs were dropped, Japanese Officials ARGUED whether they should surrender.Clearly Japan was willing to fight to the very bitter end, even with multiple Nukes dropped on Japanese cities.
