And one last thing, its known as the MINI cooper because of a man by the name of John Cooper who took the original Austin/British Leyland and Morris Mini's and tuned them up. He is also the inventor of the Cooper S, which originally came with a 1200cc engine that produced 71HP, now the S makes roughly 110 more HP then the original did. JOHN COOPER WORKS is simply the "tuning division" that BMW has payed the son of John Cooper to use the rights to his name. They produce tuning parts for the MINI

Continuation:Although it is more or less its own car, it does share more in common with its parent company BMW then the Smart ForTwo does with its parent (on parent for importing to North America and foreign markets) Daimler-Benz. Mercedes has jack shit to do with the Smart car, they simply export the car to foreign markets for distribution and marketing. So the bottom line is the MINI is very much its own brand, but BMW is the parent. End of story. I've owned two MINI's both excellent machines

your all wrong (sorta). BMW is simply the parent company to the subsidiary brand known as MINI; (Yes it must be typed in capitals because if not, you are speaking about the older brand, BMW payed money to make this official, look it up). The new MINI is still a British designed and built car (built in oxford UK (I ordered mine straight form the factory) along side the 3 series, (at least in the same plant division.) It is NOT a small BMW with a MINI badge, its very much its own car.
